Spark vs MorningZero: the free tier is real, and here is what it caps
A lot of people searching for a Spark alternative don't need one. Spark Free holds unlimited accounts for nothing and its iPhone app is the best in the field. The reasons to leave are specific.
Facts and prices checked 26 September 2026
Why would you leave an email app that costs nothing? Spark Mail is $0 for unlimited accounts, $10 for Plus and $20 for Pro, and price is rarely why people leave.
The better question is what Spark caps, and whether you've hit it.
Plenty of people haven't, and they should stay. If you want more accounts for free, nothing anywhere beats unlimited accounts at $0. If you live on an iPhone, Spark's homepage cites an Apple Editors' Choice award and a 4.6 rating, and we have no iOS app at all.
Spark also suits you if you mostly want one list, because its Smart Inbox merges accounts and buckets them by type. And if you need team features, its shared threads and comments start on Free, with two collaborators, and go unlimited on the paid tiers.
The caps, as Spark lists them
We read Spark's pricing page on 20 September 2026 with the billing toggle set to monthly, and again on 26 September.
On yearly billing the two paid tiers show $8.25 and $16.58.
| Free | Plus ($10/mo) | Pro ($20/mo) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email accounts | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| How far back the AI assistant can see | 1 month | 1 year | Full history |
| AI credits | Limited preview | "Extended" monthly credits | "High" monthly credits |
| AI meeting notes | 5, lifetime | 40 a month | Unlimited |
| Team collaboration | 2 active collaborators, 10 assignments | Unlimited collaborators | Unlimited, plus read statuses and HubSpot |
The history cap is the one people hit without knowing it. On Free, the assistant can't answer a question about a thread from last quarter, and on Plus it can't reach a contract from two years ago. Nothing looks broken when that happens.
Credits run out just as quietly. Spark's FAQ says that when they do, you "purchase a one-time add-on or wait until it automatically refills the next month". To be fair to Spark, none of this is hidden; it's all below the plan cards.
A client, and a layer that reads first
Spark is a client. It merges accounts, buckets mail into a Smart Inbox, and looks good doing it on every platform except Linux, and its AI is an assistant you call on when you want it.
MorningZero reads every message before you do. Each one lands in Needs you or Other, with a category and a reason you can hover. Filing rules are sentences, search matches meaning across every account, and Ask Zero cites the emails it read.
The practical test is whether you're still reading most of what arrives. Spark's Smart Inbox makes all of it easier to scan, while triage means you only scan two percent of it.
On price, Spark wins at every mailbox count, and we won't pretend otherwise. What you'd be paying us for is not having to read them.

If you did switch
You'd give up a fair amount. Spark is cheaper at every account count, has an iPhone app we can't match, does team collaboration, and has had years more polish than we have.
Spark also supports any IMAP server, whereas we support nine named providers and don't accept arbitrary hosts, so we never hold a credential for a server we haven't checked. Enterprise customers can ask us to evaluate a self-hosted one, but if you're on a self-hosted server, Spark works and we don't.
In return, every message is classified with a reason and there are no credits to count. Rules are written as sentences and previewed before they run, the search box matches meaning across accounts, there's a Linux app, and nothing sends itself.

What it won’t do
The limits, before you find them yourself.
We aren't free. Spark Free is $0 with unlimited accounts; our cheapest plan is $19.
We have no iPhone app. Spark's mobile app is better than anything we could claim.
We don't do team collaboration. Spark has shared threads and comments even on Free, for two collaborators.
We have no Apple Editors' Choice, no 21 million users, and a year less of everything.
Questions
Asked often enough to answer here.
Is Spark's free plan really unlimited?
For accounts, yes. What it limits is the AI: one month of history on Free, one year on Plus, full history on Pro. Meeting notes are capped at five for the life of a free account.
What does Spark cost on monthly billing?
Plus $10 per user per month, Pro $20. The page opens on the yearly toggle showing $8.25 and $16.58. Read 20 September 2026.
Which providers does each support?
Spark: Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, Yahoo, Exchange and any IMAP account, on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. MorningZero: Gmail, Workspace, Outlook, Microsoft 365 and nine named app-password providers, on web, macOS, Windows, Linux and Android.
When does MorningZero make sense over Spark?
When the mail is the problem rather than the client. Spark shows you everything, bucketed. MorningZero reads every message, tells you which ones need you and why, and doesn't sell it by the credit.
